Welcome to the Business! How Kit Came to Life

Welcome to the Business! How Kit Came to Life

Every good story has to start somewhere. Kit’s Biscuit Business started with a real cat and a running joke.

Kit is a real tuxedo cat who belongs to one of my best friends. For a time, I lived with both of them, and Kit quickly became part of everyday life.

Somewhere along the way, we started imagining that Kit had a secret job.

And not just one.

One day, Kit might be running a taco truck. Another day, he was selling ice cream. There was always some new business venture or job we imagined Kit secretly working on when we weren’t looking.

Then came the biscuit business.

If you’ve ever lived with a cat, you’ve probably seen them press their paws into a blanket, pillow, or anything else soft enough to knead. Cat people often call it “making biscuits.” Kit was no exception.

So naturally, if Kit was already making biscuits, why not turn it into a business?

That was the idea that stuck.

The Biscuit Business Is Born

There was something about the idea of this little tuxedo cat secretly putting on a chef hat and getting to work that I loved.

Over time, that idea turned into a story.

What if Kit really did have a secret biscuit business? What if he waited until his best friend left the house, hurried into the kitchen, and got to work? And, most importantly, what if he had to finish everything and clean up before she came home?

That became the foundation for Kit’s Biscuit Business.

In the book, Kit lives with his best friend, Jessica. As soon as Jessica heads out for the day, Kit gets busy baking his famous biscuits. He has orders to fill, work to do, and a kitchen that needs to look exactly as it did before Jessica gets home.

The business may be imaginary, but Kit himself is very real.

From Tuxedo Cat to Chef Kit

Once the story was written, it was time to turn the real Kit into the character I had imagined.

That’s where the incredibly talented illustrator Natia Gogiashvili came in.

Natia took the idea of Chef Kit and brought him and his world to life. His tuxedo coloring stayed, of course, but now he had his signature chef hat, a cozy kitchen, and an entire biscuit operation of his own.

Seeing Kit illustrated for the first time was pretty special. This real cat I knew so well was suddenly staring back at me from the pages of a children’s book.

If you love the artwork in Kit’s Biscuit Business as much as I do, be sure to check out more of Natia’s work, too.

In February 2026, Kit’s Biscuit Business was officially published, and Kit’s secret business wasn’t so secret anymore.

Just the Beginning

What started as a silly idea about giving a cat a different job every day eventually became a book, a character, and a world that continues to grow.

Kit has more adventures ahead, and NJB Studios Press is growing beyond his world too. This blog will be a place to share behind-the-scenes looks at the books, recipes, original short stories, updates, and more.

It’s still a little surreal to think that all of this started with a real tuxedo cat named Kit and the simple idea that maybe “making biscuits” could be more than just a cat’s favorite pastime.

Welcome to the business. We’re just getting started. 🐾
